Today’s post is a review of a DVD I recently had the pleasure to watch: Introduction to Small Animal Acupressure by Amy Snow and Nancy Zidonis, founders and owners of Tallgrass Animal Acupressure.

I have been a fan of their book “The Well-Connected Dog” for a long time (and written about it before on this blog, click on the book title to go to that post) and I’m equally fond of this DVD. It gives you a really nice overview of the concepts of TCM and shows you how to find important points on your pet, and also how to do an acupressure health maintenance treatment.

Amy and Nancy talk about everything from chi and what it does, the history and benefits of acupressure, yin/yang, meridians, acupoints, to how to do an assessment of the dog, choose a location, ask the dog for permission and do a treatment.

The walkthrough of how to do a treatment covers opening, a simple way to select points to work on, the association points and the conditions they relate to, how to work on them (finger work techniques), and finally how to close the session.

Getting a visual overview of how to find specific points is incredibly helpful. It is described in the book, but it can be tricky to do on your own the first few times, and seeing it “live” really helps.

I loved that the entire DVD is set outside on a sunny summer day, and that other animals are allowed to wander in and out of the picture. I watched this DVD the first time after a really stressful day at work, and it was very calming and soothing. A great way to unwind while learning something useful.

This DVD is, as the name says, a great introduction to small animal acupressure and the concepts and theories behind it. I think it is the perfect companion to The Well-Connected Dog, because, as I mentioned above, the book is great, but seeing how to find the points makes it so much easier, and once you are done watching the DVD, you will want to know more, and then the book is there for you.

And if you want to learn even more, I highly recommend taking one of their workshops, which are held all over the country (and world). Check the latest Events and Workshops listing for upcoming classes here in the US, and the school lists for Canada, Australia, Europe and the UK), for upcoming Tallgrass workshops in your country (I am in the process of putting together updates for all the lists for 2011).

For those who have not read my earlier post on the National Board of Certification for Animal Acupressure (NBCAAM), it was established in 2008 on the initiative of Amy Snow and Nancy Zidonis of of Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute. Their goal was to establish professional standards for animal massage and acupressure practitioners and, in their own words, “provide examinations that reflect and uphold the highest professional standards of practice for animal acupressure and massage.”

NBCAAM continues to grow and recently welcomed two well-known members renowned for their work in their respective fields: Linda Tellington-Jones and Dr. Michael Fox.

The press release excerpts below are printed with the permission of Amy Snow:

Linda Tellington-Jones
Linda Tellington-Jones, PhD, whose revolutionary Tellington TTouch® Training program has helped the physical, mental, emotional and behavioral aspects of thousands of animals and humans around the globe for decades, has been granted the first Advisory Board Membership of the National Board of Certification for Animal Acupressure and Massage.

In addition to honoring Linda, NBCAAM has granted TTouch experience as a validated part of the required hours for the Equine and Canine Acupressure Examination. Amy Snow, co-founder of NBCAAM, states, “We want to recognize Linda for all the amazing work she has done over the years in bringing humane, hands-on therapies to animals. She has literally created a new mind set regarding the care, treatment, training and health of all animals.”

“I’m very pleased to be recognized with this honor,” says Linda. “I’m so grateful for the acknowledgement of this work and the accreditation of TTouch by the NBCAAM. I also appreciate these innovative people in bringing standards to the industry. We discovered years ago in our organization that standards are necessary to maintain the integrity of TTouch and all it represents — from the actual hands-on elements of TTouch to business procedures to practitioner ethics.”

Linda continues, saying, “I am so pleased that NBCAAM has also created an outline of core competencies for practitioners — just as we have established with TTouch, the animal owner can then be assured that the practitioner has a background and training that can be trusted.”

Dr. Michael W. Fox

Dr. Michael W. Fox, veterinarian and author, recently accepted an Honorary Membership in NBCAAM. Dr. Fox is renowned for being the pioneer in the field of animal massage and human-animal relationships. He has written over 40 books and currently writes the nationally syndicated newspaper column Animal Doctor. Between 1976 and 2002 he served in various positions with the Humane Society of the United States, including Scientific Director and Vice President for Bioethics and Sustainable Agriculture.

He earned his veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College, London, from where he graduated in 1962. His subsequent research into animal behavior and development in the US was at the Jackson Memorial Research Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, and the Thudichum Psychiatric Research Institute, Galesburg IL. This work resulted in a dissertation entitled Integrative Development of the Brain and Behavior in the Dog, (published in 1971 by the University of Chicago Press), that earned a Ph.D. in Medicine from London University in 1967.

As Associate Professor of Psychology at Washington University, St Lois, MO, Dr. Fox continued behavioral and developmental studies in dogs, wolves and other related canids, for which he earned a D.Sc. in animal behavior/ethology from London University in 1976.

The Healing Touch: The Proven Massage Program for Cats and Dogs by Dr. Fox, published in 1981, was one of the first texts on animal massage. Soon after this publication, he received certification as a human massage therapist from the State of California. He is widely recognized as an expert in animal emotions, rights, and well-being as well as human-animal relationships and rights, bioethics, biotechnology, humane, sustainable agriculture, and holistic health.

Dr. Fox is a member of the British Veterinary Association, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, Founding Member of the International Society for Applied Animal Ethology, and an Honor Roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

This guest post comes from Jodi McLaughlin, who was the featured practitioner in the first acupressure post. Jodi, a long-time holistic animal health provider and owner and founder of The Blissful Bunny Massage Workshops, obviously has a soft spot for rabbits. I wrote about both acupressure and Jodi in more depth in my previous post, so I won’t repeat myself here. But don’t miss the story of her rabbit Diego (in the post mentioned above), it is very touching.

I didn’t know much about the digestive issues of rabbits before doing a bit of research for this post, but it seems they are very susceptible to digestive disorders. If your rabbit, and especially if it is a baby rabbit, all of a sudden becomes lethargic, won’t eat and/or has diarrhea, take him/her to the vet immediately – they can die in just a few hours if not treated.

Supportive Treatment for Bunny Digestion
by Jodi McLaughlin

Caution: Bunny Massage is intended as a complement to regular veterinary care. If your bunny is experiencing a digestive slowdown, call your Veterinarian A.S.A.P.

While making Vet preparations you may want to wrap bunny in a towel with a warm water bottle or warm pack against his belly. Massage bun-bun between the eyes and sweep along the jaw-line, back over the face and out to the tips of the ears.

As prey animals, stress can contribute to disease in domesticated rabbits. Sharing intimate touch time with our lagomorph companions creates a blissful and thriving housemate.

Begin your bunny massage sessions on a secure table or lap. Always use a gentle and light touch. Bunny will guide you through the session.

Bloating, Digestion and General Nervousness
Belly and Sides (between last rib and hips): If bunny accepts “trance” position, use fingers to lightly massage tummy with clockwise circles. Or, with bun sitting or laying in normal position, connect fingers under belly and sweep up and over sides onto back. Make 6 or more belly passes. Next, lightly jiggle the hands as you sweep up and over bunny’s sides. Another 6 or more passes should please Bun-Bun.

Acupressure Master Point for Digestion, Stomach 36
Knee: Use thumb or index finger to make dime size circles, always clockwise, on the outside of bun’s lower legs, just below the knee caps.

General Reflexology and Spleen-Stomach points
Hind-feet and Ankles: If bun allows (perhaps when held on back or securely against your body), brush fingers down the top and underside of hind feet 3 times, then lightly squeeze all toes. Next tap thumb or index finger along the inside edge of both feet finishing with a light squeeze around each ankle. Be very gentle. If bun enjoys foot massage, work front feet and toes also.

Always begin and end bunny massage time with 3 hand sweeps from head to tail tip. Finish with dampened hands to wipe the halo of loose fur off bunny.

Massage is simply petting Bunster with a present and loving intention. As prey animals, stress is a primary reason for illness in house rabbits.

Keep Bunster’s digestive system running smoothly. Provide him with fresh water, a daily offering of greens and safe herbs, grass hay, nutritious pellets, unfiltered sunlight, comforting touch and environment, friends, and the invitation to play. Everyday will be a Blissful Bunny Day!
